BIG Day 1 Nintendo Switch 2 System Update Incoming! + Launch News!

AI-Generated Summary

Nintendo has announced a significant day-one system firmware update for the upcoming Switch 2, which has sparked discussions about the company’s approach to media coverage and console launches. Unlike traditional practices, Nintendo is reportedly withholding early review units, with some media outlets receiving the console only at launch. This move has caused frustration among journalists and third-party developers, as it limits pre-launch coverage and critical reviews. Despite this, Nintendo remains confident in meeting U.S. demand for the Switch 2, with pre-orders and stock availability being a priority. Additionally, Nintendo has emphasized the importance of physical games in the immediate future, though the industry may be shifting toward digital formats. The Switch 2 is also rumored to feature an updated DLSS system, potentially enhancing performance post-launch. Meanwhile, the GameCube controller for the Switch has seen high demand and scalping, and the NSO expansion pack has added Killer Instinct Gold to its library. Overall, Nintendoโ€™s strategies for the Switch 2 launch reflect a shift in how it engages with media and manages its product rollout.

So, a big system firmware upgrade for Nintendo Switch 2, aka a day one patch, has seemingly been leaked online. And the source of where this is coming from is actually rather interesting because it also reveals potentially how Nintendo is feeling about media coverage and early hands-on from a traditional industry perspective, this console launch. And I’m going to say they’re doing something that historically we have not seen them do before or really any other major gaming company in recent memory. Uh and it’s an interesting one. So we have to unpack that and what if anything to expect from the day one system patch in terms of core functionality. Uh then we have some direct comments from Mr. Doug Bowser just stating good news for people who are still on a hunt for pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 because he believes that here in the US they will be able to comfortably meet demand for the console. And I will also say check your My Nintendo registration email. Uh it seems like a lot of those have been reportedly going out as of recently online with invites to pre-order the console. Uh Nintendo also made some comments on how they feel about physical games in the immediate future, which I think is a good little distinction and something we need to visit in today’s video. There are straight up some Japanese retailers that are already looking primed and ready to go for this console launch. And I do want to show you guys what that looks like. And if you missed out on the GameCube pre-order for the Nintendo Switch 2 console, yeah, we already have a pretty unfortunate scalping situation with this one. So, we’ll unpack all of this info, but before we do, make sure you like, subscribe, and turn on your bell notification to join Sun Nation if you’re new here. And I want to first kick this off right over at the game business where you can see the following write up where it says, “Press warned, no Switch consoles until launch. The game press will not be receiving Nintendo Switch 2 consoles until just before it comes out. The game business has learned. Some media have even been warned they will not have their machine until launch day.” Nintendo has told journalists that this is due to a requirement of a significant day one patch. It’s really frustrating, said one editor. We will need to cover Switch 2 while also working across Summer Gamefest. How are we supposed to do that? Another added, anyone who can get a hold of a console early from a dodgy retailer will have a head start in terms of coverage. I know the console will be sold out at launch, but what about all the other games? And Nintendo is holding some press preview events for Mario Kart World, which will give journalists and critics an extended play of the upcoming video game. But the reality is is that there will be very few, if any, reviews of the Switch 2 or its games until after the machine has come out. The situation has stunned some of the third-party publishers planning Switch 2 launch titles. Key thirdparty launch games include Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Project Red, Split Fiction from EA, Civilization 7 from 2K Games, Hitman: World of Assassination from IO Interactive, Street Fighter 6 from Capcom, and Sonic X Shadow Generations from Sega. One PR boss told me that they feel that they have something special for the launch of Switch 2 for those that are wanting something else in addition to Mario Kart, but the lack of independent critical validation is going to make it very hard for us. maybe we would have been better off waiting a few weeks. So the big takeaway from this in my opinion is that media is not happy and it’s pretty clear in that particular realm that you know listen they feel like they’re getting grouped in with the general public and they’re not happy about that particular treatment. Now, I do understand that you want to have full reviews of games up and ready to go right around the launch of those games, and I do think it will be something that going forward is still provided to most media outlets like an early review game copy and things like that. Uh, but the reason behind why this is happening, according to Nintendo, is what’s more interesting to me, which is that of a significant day one patch. To kind of close out my thoughts on the media thing though, I do think that this is something of Nintendo kind of just not really seeing maybe as much of the value in the mainstream media coverage like your IGN’s, Eurogamers, and massive media companies that cover video games nowadays as they once did. And I’m sure there’s, you know, quite a bit of feelings involved in that if you’re not getting supplied early top priority access, but I don’t think that Nintendo necessarily has to go that route if they don’t choose. So, and you know, obviously I’m a little bit biased in this conversation. It’s kind of going to be nice to get my Switch 2 at the same time as a lot of these mega media companies, but I do think it shows kind of a shift in the vote of confidence of Nintendo and how their things get covered and kind of independent outlets will kind of be starting at the same point of these major media publications. Now again, this doesn’t mean there going to be zero outlets and zero early coverage of the Switch 2 in terms of early review units, but it’s not going to be on a widespread scale like we have historically seen in the past. So, what does this mean in terms of functionality if if anything for a day one patch? Well, one correlation or idea I guess I want to share and it may not be related to the day one patch at all, but I do find the timing interesting has to do with a ever more growing reliable source in Nash Weedle with successfully leaking things online ahead of them, the announcement from Nintendo. They’ve been right with a lot of different things here in recent memory, but and we may actually make a separate deep dive video going over all their stuff with how much has come true in recent memory. But you have this circulating just essentially half a day, 12 hours before this story broke online, and it says leak express Switch 2 specs are leaking, but there are details that haven’t been shared yet. One of them is that Switch 2’s DLSS is ready to be updated. And from what I’ve been able to investigate, it seems that its first update will arrive before the end of the year. So that is definitely something that could just be down the line. But I find it interesting that he’s saying things like the tech specs that are being talked about online and all of this coverage early, you know, from sources like Digital Foundry saying the consoles running games up to X standard or whatnot. Uh he’s basically just insinuating maybe DLSS is somehow getting updated or patched past the launch of Nintendo Switch 2. And I would assume that it would be uh for better performance than what it already has been spotted at. And it’s already been spotted at pretty impressive performance because a lot of sources haven’t really even been been able to tell the DLSS is being utilized and then we find out from the developers that like yeah, it’s enabled and that’s how they’re getting some of those visuals. Uh so it could be something related to that. I would love to think that Nintendo’s just been swerving us this whole time with the plain looking UI that literally looks like another version of the Nintendo Switch One UI and they actually have a way more customizable and unique interface that still, you know, functionality first, make it work, right? But give us some personality and some flare in there with customizable themes and also let us have folders of games on the main home screen and not just tucked away under all software. Like there’s still some really basic things that I want to see change with the UI on the new Nintendo Switch 2. And and I don’t necessarily think we’re going to get anything like that. I don’t think that Nintendo would advertise everything that they have in its current form and then drastically change it with a day one update. And a lot of this at the end of the day could just be to enable things like the game chat functionality and turn the servers on in the console and really just kind of finalize some of these things that they don’t want to do until the conso’s launch time to stop from very early leaks of this thing being out there and to basically keep things as tightly sealed as possible and not have a bunch of, you know, full system capabilities floating around out there uh pre-launch official launch that is of the console. So, that’s kind of where my mindset falls. I’m setting my expectations on the lower side for a day one patch. But, nonetheless, it’s been cited that specifically the reason that media won’t be getting this console, at least according to Nintendo, is that there is a significant day one patch headed to the console itself, like at a system level, meaning a new system firmware. So, that’s an interesting one that we will obviously have to wait to see what ultimately materializes from it. But next up, you have, if you were somebody who’s still on the hunt for a Nintendo Switch 2 console, there was a recent interview with Doug Bowser. And well, you can see the headline here directly from Nintendo everything where it says Nintendo believes it will have enough stock to meet Switch 2 demand in the US. And um to basically just summarize exactly what was said from Doug Bowser, we’ll read just his quoted portion here where it says, “Nintendo president, Mr. Shintara Furkawa last week announced that we’ll have 15 million units in our forecast for the Nintendo Switch 2 and 4.5 million units for Nintendo Switch during the fiscal year. That forecast was really driven by wanting to match, if you will, what we accomplish with the Nintendo Switch in the first 10 months of its release. As we look at our plans here in the US, we do believe we’ll have production and supply that will allow us to meet consumer demand. We know there’s been strong positive reaction to Nintendo Switch 2 early on and we’ve seen that through our pre-orders, but we do plan to have a continuous flow of product that’ll be available through the holidays. Now, if they can actually stay stocked and on store shelves through the holidays in the initial launch year of the Nintendo Switch 2, that will really be an impressive feat. And I don’t think that it means that you’re going to be able to just casually easily walk into any retailer and find one at any time. But I do think it means that if you follow these stock tracker accounts online, Jake Randall, Nintend, Warrior 64, sources like that, when they’re actually notifying restocks or notifying people of restocks happening, rather, you know, I think you’re going to have a really good fighting chance at securing your system relatively easier at launch or right there afterwards. We’re already seeing all of these reports from, you know, Target and Best Buy that Day One stock will be a thing. Best Buy, you can literally show up at midnight and potentially get a console without a pre-order and that they’re saying it’s going to vary store by store and inventory will be limited, but you can literally no pre-order. Show up and potentially get a midnight console from Best Buy. So, there is a lot of stock on hand at the launch. And I’ve also mentioned uh in the beginning of the video, check your my Nintendo store email. Make sure they haven’t told you it’s your time to pre-order because I’m hearing that those are going out in large waves as well. So, so just interesting to see all of this pop up. And maybe Nintendo was being more truthful than we realized when they were saying things like the way they were going to combat scalping was indeed by just flooding the market and truly trying to meet consumer demand for for their the launch of their next generation hardware. And it seems like if they’re not going to be there entirely, they’re going to get uh incredibly close, which is definitely a good thing because if you do want this console early on, right after launch, I think it’s going to be uh you know, nice to see people not have to pay those outrageous scalper prices. So, from here, we have Nintendo mentioning physical games, and we may do a separate deep dive video on this entirely uh tied into the game key card situation, but we have some comments from Mr. Doug Bowser on this one as well where you can see over at Nintendo everything where it says Nintendo on physical games says they’re still a key part of our business. And the big thing here and what I want to highlight from what Mr. Bowser said is Bowser’s full full words are in the immediate future physical games are still a key part of our business and we value our relationships in particular with our retailers and want to make sure we have products available for them to sell to their consumers. When you look at game key cards for us, our goal with Nintendo Switch 2, similar to what we were able to accomplish on Nintendo Switch, is to have the broadest and deepest library of content we possibly can. And that includes our publishing partners. And game key cards are a way that our publishing partners are able to bring more content onto the platform, deeper and larger and more immersive content on the platform. So PR speak for right now in the immediate future. Notice that wording. I really want to point that out. I do think that we are potentially looking at the last console generation where you can actually have physical as a viable option and we are already seeing one foot out the door with every physical edition which is that of a game key card from a third party perspective. Now Nintendo they are putting their games on full 64 GB cartridges but part of what they uh did this generation is only put out a 64 GB cartridge or a game key card or you can do the code in a box situation. So, they’re not necessarily making it easy for third parties to put their content on a 64 GB cartridge that could cost upwards of $16 is some of the rumored talk going around online. It’s obviously cutting into profits and we don’t have these smaller 8,6 and 32 GB variants like we did in the Nintendo Switch generation. That could be tied to the type of faster memory that they’re using for these cartridges and they needed to make this change. whatever the case. But no doubt physical gaming while it is maybe still in the immediate future a priority for Nintendo and they still have people picking up physical games. Uh yeah, considering that we might be in this generation 5 to 7 years and we’re looking at what Nintendo brings to market next, I do think that by that time we might see physical games go the way of basically limited run doing some kind of collectible box art and everything for these games and some kind of special edition. uh but not necessarily anything to actually be supported on the console because the minute they remove that cartridge slot and or disc drive from any of the consoles out there, you’re not going to have a choice anymore and retailers at retail won’t be able to sell you a physical version or if there is one more generation, it might just be everything physical game key card of some sort or the equivalent where it’s just a download from a server anyway. So I while Bowser’s saying it’s important for now, I I really just don’t think that Nintendo is going to commit to it for much longer than this. But unfortunate news for all the game collectors, of course, myself being in that conversation, but I’m already slowly wrapping my mind around picking up mainly third-p partyy games digitally this generation, and I’ll get the stuff that’s on the full cartridge on the physical edition. But from there, we have a good-looking physical shelf as you can see right here from Go Nintendo where it says Japanese retailers gear up for Switch 2 launch less than a month to go. And yeah, just from judging from this picture, it literally looks like and maybe there’s nothing in these boxes and they’re just shrink wrapped anyway. But this looks like finalized retail product for Nintendo Switch 2 just sitting on a shelf completely ready to be purchased. So that picture, I just wanted to briefly mention this because it’s like literally a hype story for me. like just the fact that we’re about to walk into retailers and stores are going to look like this. We’re talking a few weeks to go, guys. Very quickly approaching the launch of this console. Uh, okay, let’s briefly mention this. And actually, a new story bonus that I didn’t mention in the intro is going to be in this video, too, cuz it literally dropped while I was filming it. But first, we got to get to Switch 2 Gamecube controller being sold uh for $160 plus on eBay. And yes, this is a real report. This is actually accurate pricing. Uh stuff that you are already seeing from the launch of the GameCube controller that did go live in the middle of the day. To be fair, on the day that Nintendo said it would go live, uh you know, it was like noon my time and central. That was 10:00 a.m. Pacific time and 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. And you had to be a Nintendo account holder. And it was one per account. Very strict limit. And I actually think it was one per family plan because uh I even had my fianceรฉ try to log in and purchase hers and she it it already said item limit reached even though she was under her account and I was under mine. Uh but there was a the stock was up for a while but you literally could only get one which from a scalping perspective I get. But if you have multiple people on your family plan like many do it’s one of those that I think you know could have been handled just a little bit better in my opinion. But unfortunately with the NSO controllers when they’re the new big thing like this, it is one of those situations where you are for sure going to have a hard time finding this because Nintendo’s the only supplier of it for the first year plus easy. you’re just going to have to follow stock tracker accounts and try to be ready for restocks when they happen because yeah, now that the initial wave has gone up and sold out, I do think that the scalper pricing on this thing is going to be pretty regular for a while, unfortunately, just because Nintendo never supplies enough stock of these NSO controllers. That’s happened historically with each other one that I’ve covered here on the channel, and it looks to be the case with the GameCube controller once again. Uh, okay. The very last cool piece of news that broke literally while I was filming this, like I I was very surprised to see it, but uh, Killer Instinct Gold available to play now. So, when you’re watching this video, you can check out and hop into Killer Instinct Gold for the N64 NSO expansion pack. So, a banger way to end out the, you know, Switch One edition of NSO updates probably before we get to the launch of Switch 2. Uh, I mean, I have some nostalgia for this game and I definitely will be hopping into it just to boot it up and play it and have fun. I mean, it’s just a great You talk about a beat him up fighter to enjoy. This is one of them for sure. So, definitely go don’t sleep on this. I would definitely check it out. Update your N64 app on NSO and enjoy some Killer Instinct Gold. Um, on the trailer says available May 16th. That’s of course the day you’re seeing this go live, but as the post said, uh, because I think that’s going based off Japan time, it’s already live right now. like you can literally update your system and play it. So, by the time you’re seeing this video, you can definitely hop into this game and I do recommend uh checking that out. So, Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64 still missing and also rare games. So, come on uh Nintendo, work that out and get those over already. But other than that, you know, Killer Instinct Gold is a killer addition for the NSO expansion pack. So, let me know how you’re feeling about all the different stories we talked about today. What, if anything, are you expecting from a day one system firmware patch from Nintendo for the Switch 2? What do you think about the claims that there is an updated version of DLSS coming to Switch 2? Do you think that Doug Bowser is serious about physical games being around for a while, or is his comments the immediate future all he’s committing to for that specific reason? Were you able to get a GameCube controller? And what do you think about Killer Instinct Gold Edition coming to NSO expansion pack?
