The Nintendo Switch 2 launch is now officially right around the corner and there’s a whole host of new updates and news that hit the internet that I do want to go over with you guys today. One of them having to do with Bloomberg versus Nintendo. And we’ve actually seen these back and forths in the past, but Bloomberg put out a report saying a specific profit margin was in mind for retailers in Japan with the Switch 2. Nintendo’s refuting that information. So, I want to go over what exactly is going on with that entire situation. then you probably remember uh the talk of a required system firmware update to actually play games on the Switch 2 out of the box. Meaning like maybe we couldn’t play any games until a firmware update was released to the console. Um that now has some definitive clarification around it. We also have brand new footage of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet taking full advantage of the Switch 2 version upgrade. And let me tell you, it is a day and night difference from what we saw that game run at before. In addition to Nintendo doubling down on them just saying they’re going to do these free game updates for select Switch One titles. Uh then we have a detailed video on how game share works between a Switch One and Switch 2 console, a DLSS highlight from Nintendo Switch 2 welcome tour and yet another leaked video showing off some new footage of the console. And finally, some reassuring comments from developers on the actual power level of the Switch 2 and how it is truly advanced and a step above the previous gen consoles that some people are still comparing them to online. So, we’re going to unpack all of this information, but before we do, make sure you like, subscribe, and turn on your bell notification to join Sunnation if you’re new here. And I want to first kick off this conversation right over at Bloomberg where you can see an interesting back and forth between Nintendo and Bloomberg that’s actually not the first time we’ve seen this. and we’ll talk about uh you know who to believe on this side of the story, but you have a article writing up basically going over what Nintendo is maybe having retailers make in profit margin off of the Switch 2 console. As you can see here where it says Nintendo has a shrewd plan for selling the Switch 2 in Japan. Then you have Nintendo Co. is making an unusual move with its Switch 2 distribution in Japan. It’s setting wholesale prices so retailers can earn more from each sale. Store operators would be able to make a gross margin of about 5% on each Switch 2 sold, higher than the informal industry standard of roughly 2% according to people familiar with the plan. The decision will help bolster domestic retailers and ensure the new console is given prominent placement at outlets across the country. The people said asking not to be named as the information is private. Shares of Nintendo fell as much as 2.2% in Tokyo on Monday. Okay, so what are they saying? They’re basically saying that Nintendo is getting a higher profit margin to retailers for the Switch 2 sales than what is the industry standard. Um, and this is kind of a deal, if you will. Uh, something that is between Nintendo and the retailers. So, Nintendo will have more prominent placement within their retail stores, aka you walk in, you see a big Switch 2 display, it’s going to have a lot of, you know, front and center shelf placement. Um, this may or may not be true, but according to Nintendo, it’s not because very rarely we do see them post to their business account um, and basically just call out whenever they’re seeing articles that have incorrect information. And they actually did that specifically with this article where it says on June 2nd, 2025, uh, a news report related to the wholesale price of Nintendo Switch 2 in the Japanese market was published. We want to clarify that this report is not true. Nintendo does not clo disclose any information regarding the business conditions with distribution and retail partners. Uh so pretty much just shutting down Bloomberg’s article here. Now, if you look at the past uh that we actually had Nintendo versus Bloomberg back in the Switch OLED era, and of course, Bloomberg’s reporting was that they were planning a refresh switch model. But the claim was is that there were 4K dev kits in the hands of developers uh and that there was basically 12 or something different developers that they had independently verified that with. And while we did not see a 4K Switch refresh, we did actually have everything else about the device check out and leak accurately because Bloomberg was the one talking about the longer Surface style kickstand that goes across the entire console, the 7in display that would be an OLED panel. All of that stuff checked out, but what didn’t check out was the chip. There’s some, you know, back and forth on whether or not Nintendo once had an upgrade plan for 4K on the current Switch. And then due to the fact that you know real world conditions at the time chips were very much in a shortage at that point and maybe they chose to not do that. So is there some truth to this current story on the retail profit margins for Japanese retailers selling the Switch 2 at 5% profit margin in order to kind of get a better place in the stores? Maybe, maybe not. But I think there’s probably a little bit of truth to what’s being disclosed here, but maybe not one to one accurate. And so Nintendo can come out and ref refute that exact article write up uh which we don’t see them do uh very often. So very interesting one. Nintendo versus Bloomberg is currently going on on the internet. Okay. You probably remember that we had some talk and controversy around a required day one update for the Nintendo Switch 2 console. Then later on it turns out uh maybe that’s only for backwards compatibility and not necessarily all Switch 2 games have to be like an on an updated firmware to run. And that’s actually now confirmed as you can see this from Necroalipe where it says confirmed that the console does not need a patch to run Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games or the complete NS2 edition on cartridges. Day one patch is only required for NS1 games and additional system features. Um so if you were somebody who was up in arms just absolutely upset at Nintendo that they’re requiring you in 2025 to update your console in order to play games, it’s not the case. you actually don’t have to do the update, but you will to take advantage of backwards compatibility. And this actually makes sense if it’s something that backwards compatibility where it was when they started shipping out these consoles from the distribution centers. Um, well, if it wasn’t ready and it had to be added in later, it just had to be added in later. So, I think that this should kill the controversy around it. If you were somebody who is upset about having to do a firmware update, you do not have to in order to play Switch 2 exclusive games or uh Switch 2 edition games that have all their content on the cartridge, but rather in order to enable things like backwards compatibility for Switch One games, that is a required firmware update. So, if you pop in a cartridge of, you know, Super Mario Odyssey, it’s not going to boot up until you do that system firmware upgrade. This was never really a big deal to me in my opinion cuz when you’re spending 450 bucks on a console, you probably have access to internet somewhere. Uh, and it is just unfortunately one of those things that we can’t really escape the internet nowadays. So, um, from here we have really what I would consider to be uh probably one of the most impressive looks that we’ve gotten so far. And now you do have to dismiss like the Twitter compression and stuff that we are looking at. But, uh, the actual frame rate is really what I want to call out here and the improved draw distances just like we’ve seen Nintendo talk about. This is an impressive and notable upgrade for Scarlet and Violet. otherwise very uh buggy and broken games when it comes to a performance standards. And now we have a nice look at just how smooth this game. If you haven’t played these games yet to completion like I have, I would definitely recommend you to just wait for this update to hit. Wait to play them to completion on your Switch 2. Maybe you didn’t get the DLC. Now is a good time to get the DLC and check these things out. Like this looks and runs quite honestly uh like it should have on the original Switch. and you know, Game Freak and their development tactics, they just could not pull it off uh to get the game running stable or at an acceptable frame rate. Now, that is a thing of the past and really cool footage to see. Uh there’s going to be reason to go back and check out some of your Switch One library. Uh and on that note, we do also have Nintendo just kind of reminding us uh that there’s a whole host of games that are set for performance upgrades. Uh Link’s Awakening here, ARMS, Echoes of Wisdom, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe all pointed out on the app that they will have performance upgrades. Echoes of Wisdom and Link’s Awakening being the two big ones for me that I’m excited to see because there were uh definitive frame drops in those games, especially in the overworld when progressing through certain areas. Uh and I just think, you know, they look beautiful. The art style looks really nice, but it did come with its own whole host of performance issues. So, it’ll be nice to go back and check out some of these games and see them in a better light on the Switch 2 once we get this console in our hands. Okay. From here, we have a tutorial on how to use GameS Share between Switch One and Switch 2 systems. And we actually have a full breakdown of exactly how it works. So, we’ll just kind of watch this together, but you can see the GameS Share icon that is right there on the Switch 2. And from that, once you select it, the system without a game will navigate to their game share home screen icon, and you will hit start and immediately waiting for the game to share, you will have the ability to be in that game with the person. Now, what is not clear because there’s not really a download that’s happening here. Is is this like some kind of streaming connection and the hope would be is if it is a streaming connection that we don’t notice things like lag and latency that wouldn’t be there if you were playing the game natively on the console. Um, I am hopeful that Nintendo kind of either has the latency to a minimum with streaming that you don’t have to worry about it or uh that it is something where there is a quick download that happens on your console and that is how you start up the game. One way or the other, we’ll have to test this out hands-on to really see just how well it works. But being able to share your games library this seamlessly from a Switch 2 to a Switch One uh is a pretty cool thing at the end of the day and just a nice quality of life thing that we should be able to expect as a feature with Select Games on the Switch 2 generation. So, uh from here we have just a very brief overview. Uh this is a fun post that I came across that just kind of highlights what DLSS does. Now, this shouldn’t be very surprising to anybody, but um in case if you know the welcome tour does actually have some clips just kind of outlining and Twitter compression not helping anything here, but you can see a blurriier Nintendo icon ultimately all the way to a slightly smoother one. And that’s where Nintendo’s doing a lot of the magic with the horsepower of this console and getting it to run games. They’re basically running it at lower internal resolutions and utilizing DLSS to upscale it. So the uh example that’s used here is 20 720p native uh is being upscaled to 2160p or 4K. So uh that’s how things are getting done and that actually does uh tie in to our actually that’s going to be our last story. So that ties into the performance conversation. Shout outs to OJ Player Essence, fellow content creator here on the platform. Uh CD Project Red says via IGM that Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 shouldn’t go under 30 FPS. Performant mode targets 40 fps for 120 Hz TVs and Switch 2’s screen. Switch 2 tech is better slash stronger than PS4/Xbox One. So, they were able to get Phantom Liberty running on it. So, there’s a couple nice little um clips here. I’m going to go and remove my camera to read them with you guys. So, this is straight from the developers own words. So, the Switch 2 has more RAM than the previous generation of consoles, which is also very important, he adds. All this means that not only does the Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk 2077 run better than the PS4 and Xbox One versions, uh, but it also includes the Phantom Liberty expansion, which was too much too demanding for old tech and thus was not released on last gen systems. While the Switch 2 has understandable limitations, CD Project Red has firm quality bars that it wishes to adhere to that include minimum frame rates of 30 frames per second. So, just to be clear, if it goes under 30 FPS, I don’t think that’s great. Trembley states there’s no such thing as, “Oh, this is fine to get to 25 FPS in this section.” No, it’s not. It should be 30 fps everywhere. So, nice little confirmation and vote of confidence uh from developers uh to Nintendo’s own hardware. You know, they’re saying that they’re not expecting any dips beneath 30 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077. They’re saying that the DLC that’s included for this game was far too demanding for last gen tech uh for the PS4 and Xbox One uh generation of consoles and that they’re able to get that up and running just fine on the Switch 2 and that there is obviously going to be performance limitations. This is a hybrid console, but legitimately this has modern architecture, modern tech baked into it with things like DLSS that we just looked at. These are additional levers that development teams can pull to get their games up and running quick and with less effort uh than would be the case to try to get them running on the previous generation of consoles where you’re seeing a lot of people just saying, “Oh, this is a base PS4 in a handheld uh shell.” And it’s like in some cases the raw actual GPU processing power, you can maybe make that comparison, but I’m telling you guys with the architecture and the custom Nvidia chip that was built for this thing, it is not a good comparison. Uh, and we’re really playing somewhere in the realm of just modern-day games. Uh, you know, PS4 Pro Series S when in dock mode is still a comparison in terms of visuals that I think is a slightly more accurate because you do see it with games like Final Fantasy remake with the current gen version of that game headed to Switch 2. And not to mention, it’s been teased that the entire series is coming over. like there’s a lot of exclusive to this generation games that are coming to Switch 2 that would not make it on Xbox One or PS4. So, just keep that in mind. I’m personally pretty happy with where we’re landing on the performance level of the Switch 2. Um, the last thing I just want to quickly look at, we’ve looked at a lot of leaked videos and everything about the Switch 2 already, so we’re not going to spend too much time on this, but we do get like a nice little look from one of these uh, you know, early hands-on videos of just basically this the tablet telling you to actually attach the Joy-Cons to it. And he actually does make the connection here. Of course, they’re magnetic. It’s very seamless to just go ahead and attach these things to the console. They register it immediately. Um, and nothing else is really too different from what we’ve seen from here. Just more setup screen and stuff like that. But I did find it interesting that there’s actually a prompt to tell you to get your Joy-Cons on the Switch 2 console. I’m assuming when you power up the tablet and it doesn’t recognize Joy-Cons on either side. Um, that’s what I’m assuming it’s telling you to do there. And then once he does it, it does seem to immediately boot into the Switch 2 logo and then to the setup screen. So, um, this is stuff that we’ll be able to do firsthand very soon. So, um, right now at the time of filming, I’m planning a live stream after I get my console the, you know, Best Buy midnight release. I’ll come back and unbox it and set it up with you guys here on stream. So, make sure you, uh, if you see a notification go out for that, set a reminder to, uh, come join the hype and excitement of the Switch 2 generation launch. So, we’ll be making tons of videos here on the channel. But, let me know in the comments down below where your hype levels are at for all this stuff. What games are you most excited to hop into at the launch of the Switch 2 first? and what out of any stories that we talked about today were interesting to you personally.
