[at least there’s an intro this week] welcome back to Paul’s Tech News markets were disrupted and global order dissolved into chaos this week as the direct result of one person – me because it was my birthday a few days back which explains not only the week’s belligerent celebrations that often devolved into rioting and looting but also the general feeling of existential dread and uncertainty that accompanies these occasions as one matures but apart from gifting myself a day or two this week to pretty much do nothing which was awesome especially when it’s guilt-free I also took a look-see at the tech news and believe it or not it was not all bad. there was still plenty of bad don’t get me wrong that’s impossible to avoid in 2025 it seems but there was also some good and that’s not bad. cheers! excellent! today’s video is brought to you by Thermaltake’s TR100 mini tower case and travel trunk the TR100 is a diminutive but full featured dual chamber chassis with a surprisingly roomy interior for high-end PC builds available in a variety of colors with support for up to 360 mm GPUs and a 280 mm AIO radiator on top the modular design means side panels are all removable for cable management and upgrades include an optional LCD panel or the travel trunk to easily take your TR100 gaming PC setup on the go for more on the TR100 mini tower case from Thermaltake check out my build or click the sponsor link in the video description so remember like a month ago when the Nvidia RTX 5070 launched for $550 and all the reviewers were like "Meh wait till tomorrow everyone the Radeon RX9070 and 9070 XT are going to offer much better value." Well a lot seems to have changed since then and thanks to none of the new 2025 GPUs offering value or selling at the price they were advertised for consumers are at a disadvantage and therefore this has become news ladies and gentlemen I bring you a breaking story that upon Friday April 11th 2025 for some time in the late morning and early afternoon an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 12 gig was available for purchase at its $550 MSRP on newe.com sure it’s sold out now and shipping was like 13 bucks but wow for anyone who thought 2025 maybe wasn’t going so well I imagine this has turned your opinion around and renewed your faith in PC gaming and the companies that make PC gaming hardware there’s even joy to be found in places outside of the US like our old friends the UK where Kit Guru reports an even better 5070 deal 519 Great British pounds which sounds pretty heavy but actually represents a 4% discount versus MSRP which is probably why Nvidia stock struggled this week investors really hate when you give gamers value for their money the next best option for a 5070 in the US right now per PC part picker is a 600 was a $600 white MSI Ventus 2X model looks like that sold out too but I think what would really get gamers excited is a 5070 Ti available at MSRP and I say would because that is absolutely not the case those cost a grand the 5080 is closer to 1,500 bucks 9070 and 9070 XT laughably close to a thousand and if you want a 5090 I believe Nvidia has instituted Prima Nocte, that’s where you can buy a 5090 but then Jensen comes over to your house and he gets to game on it first while you are forced to watch and he might not look it but Jensen can go all night so I’ve heard it speaking of things that get Jensen aroused a GPU launch the RTX 5060 Ti is due to debut this week or so rumors say with a Tuesday announcement and a Wednesday for sale date and along with a handful of pre-launch buzz there might even be some good news today relatively speaking see footnotes your mileage may vary per the board channels forums though board partners have been provided pricing that is lower than anticipated with the 5060 Ti 16 gig set to have an MSRP of 429 US or 3,599 RMB while the 5060 Ti 8 gig might be 379 US or 3,199 RMBB that’s $70 less for the 16 gig card where the 4060 Ti had an MSRP of $500 and 20 bucks lower for the 8 gig version and it looks like the 50 series cards will be capable of a decent double-digit performance improvement over their last gen counterparts at least if this leaked Geekbench test result is true which showed a 5060 Ti 16 gig beating the last gen 4060 Ti by 13 to 14% in Vulcan and Open CL which aren’t always direct indicators of typical rasterization performance but should at least be in the ballpark and even more good news which starting to make me feel nervous and unnatural at this point is that Nvidia seems to have loosened their grip on the power connector requirement as MSI 5060 Ti variants have been pictured with both 12v2x 6 and the much more reliable standard 8 pin PCI Express graphics power connectors hooray now it would be more of a point of principle to opt for an eight pin power connector with these lower power cards as even 12v2x6 should have no problem safely delivering 150 watts for an RTX 5060 or 180 watts for a 5060 Ti but even if it’s just to help board partners keep costs down I approve of this now being an option now do it for other 50 series cards Nvidia especially the 5090 i will run four 8pin peg connectors any day over 12vt2x6 we also have apparent confirmation that the 5060s are PCI Express 5.0 by8 cards which isn’t surprising still plenty of bandwidth and not that we needed further assurance but some ASUS marketing materials seem to verify that there is a 5060 Ti 8 gig version that exists as well as the 16 gig which was spotted by Unico’s hardware in a promotional image for a full lineup of Asus PC hardware Hatsune Miku special edition so now we will all need to buy this entire package of things too shucks you guys you guys into Hatsune you guys are into Hatsune Miku right something we don’t need to buy is GPUZ because it is free hooray and it is now updated with support for the GPUs I have been talking about today which are definitely still rumors but were also listed in the patch notes on Friday the 5060 Ti is there as well as the 50 series laptop GPUs and the RX970 GRE which I talked about last week while there was some hope that AMD was preparing the RX960 or 960 XT to launch against Nvidia’s 5060Ti that seems less likely now it’s more likely that we have a GRE great Radeon edition coming instead with big question marks about whether it will be region limited and if there will be more than 10 or 20 of them made that would be nice because in the past month it has become evident that AMD is doing an even worse job of keeping their 9000 series GPUs in stock than Nvidia has done with the 5070 and once again AMD seems to have missed the points that when Nvidia sets the bar low you’re supposed to easily step over it and not go for a limbo attempt still more RX9000 series cards have continued to launch in small artisan batches so it would appear with the latest being the spectral white edition of Powerols Redevil RX970 XT i have a video coming up featuring this one so I was keeping an eye on the price which was $900 out of the gate just a $300 markup versus supposed base MSRP but nevertheless the 20 or so units that MicroEnter said were in stock at their Santa Ana location all sold out on launch day thankfully now that all the cards have sold out the price has dropped to $850 on the flip flip side it comes with a tiny version of itself with fans that actually spin so technically you’re getting two graphics cards speaking of getting more than you bargained for when you’re almost full to the brim with tech news we fill in the corners with tech briefs the tariff situation here in the US continued to cause problems for manufacturers distributors and consumers alike with a tumultuous week capped off by the Trump administration pushing a 90-day tariff pause button for everyone except China and except for that 10% minimum tariff that was already in place before they went ham last week it’s difficult for me to cover these policies as they seem to change on a whim day by day but I wanted to say three things first a tariff is a tax which you can verify by searching tariff definition on the internet or spending 5 minutes with a junior high econ teacher probably more like 30 seconds but thank you to the handful of canankerous armchair etmologists who tried to convince us otherwise in last week’s comment section second I would rather not talk about this stuff believe it or not but I would be doing a pretty bad job covering tech news if I just ignored something that was majorly and directly impacting the price of the products I’m supposed to be focusing on and thirdly yes tariffs are majorly and directly impacting the price of tech products and here I submit evidence of the companies themselves saying things like "We must increase our pricing due to the unprecedented and aggressive tariffs." Laptop manufacturers are likewise suspending shipments and or increasing prices and from a consumer perspective I think these are all bad things and if something is bad I don’t think it’s unreasonable to criticize it without that I don’t think I would even have much of a show every week moving along though the Shenzen 8K UHD video industry cooperation alliance in China revealed a new video connection standard this week dubbed GPMI or generalpurpose multimedia interface which is meant for 8K video as the alliance suggests using a standard USB type-C connector it can deliver 96 Gbits per second of bandwidth or double HDMI 2.1 as well as 240 watts of power while a newer GPMI typeB connector that’s in the works will bump that up to 192 Gbits per second and 480 watts of power that could power all but the highestend gaming laptops while providing massive amounts of bandwidth for video or data all via a single plug but adoption is always the big question for a new standard which the USB type-C compatibility should help out with keep an eye out for devices that integrate GPMI in 2026 and beyond but maybe they should get some better GPUs to the market first if 8K high refresh rate gaming is ever really going to be a thing i’ll probably just upscale from 1080 with DLSS5 kawasaki has a new product for gamers who can’t decide between Red Dead Redemption and Cyberpunk 2077 it’s called Corio and it’s a robot horse that you can ride across the open plains or under a waterfall or up that mountain that’s just over on the other side of the uncanny valley revealed at the Osaka Kensai Expo on April 4th it is a two-seater quadriped robot that you steer with your body and of course it uses AI to scan and navigate over rough terrain it’s powered by 150 cc hydrogen generator engine but aside from the ridiculous chasm leaps from the video and the fact that it looks like a Shinra designed mini boss from Final Fantasy 7 I am sure there are plenty of disabled folks who would love to take Corio for a ride off the beaten paved or otherwise flat and evenly graded path finally we say goodbye to Fry Electronics again the tech and PC hardware retailer here in the US that gamers had a lovehate relationship with despite going under back in February 2021 the fry location in Burbank was only just demolished as documented by the LA Times Tik Tok account each fries had a different theme with this one being space themed but they weren’t able to find anyone with the time resources or motivation to preserve the big UFO on top so it was torn apart by diggers so it could be recycled thanks for the memories Fries and thanks LA Times for one last look at was once the world’s largest unidentified frying object so there you have it guys tech news for the week and if you liked it click that like button or leave me a comment down below while you’re down there all of the articles that I talked about today are linked in the video’s description if you’re interested and you can also check out my store at paulsharboard.net for highquality merchandise t-shirts hoodies beer sets and more subscribing to my channel is always a good call too thanks again everyone and we’ll see you next week
